The Miami Metro Project investigates the Miami Metro system by studying and depicting the train itself—and those that use it—from entrance to exit.
Inspired by artists like Walker Evans and Ernst Haas, The Miami Metro Project utilizes light, reflection, and framing elements to take both a documentary and abstracted approach to capturing the space. My images look not only to the passengers of the metro, but also to the unique details of construction and light created in it to create a complete view of the experience. Much of my images take a fly-on-the-wall perspective, but in some cases, the anonymous observer reveals herself.
The Miami Metro Project presents the metro not just as a mode of transport but as a place where many spend a great deal of their of their lives. In comparing my relationship with public transportation as someone from the Northeast to the way it is viewed and utilized in the South, my images explore the metro not from the perspective of a detached documentarian, but as an involved participant. My images make note of who those travelers are, including myself, and what makes the space they inhabit interesting and surprisingly beautiful.
